My three-year-old iPhone has been acting up. Responding slow, hemorrhaging battery life, the usual.

I have Apple Care (tech support) so I made an appointment at my local Apple Store. It was busy, full of parka-clad Minnesotans chatting with salespeople and examining demo gadgets.

On my arrival, I was greeted and asked to sit at a table near the register. There I sat for more than half an hour, well past my appointment time. There also, sat others with appointments while we were largely ignored by staff, some of whom chatted with co-workers.

“Excuse me,” I finally said to the nearest employee. “Have I been checked in? His face frowned at his iPad. “You haven’t been helped yet?”

“No. My appointment was about 45 minutes ago?”

Hmm… hold on a sec.

After a few more minutes I was attended to by a young woman who ran some tests on my phone, and agreed the battery performance was far less than optimal. Unfortunately, they were unable to fix it just then, as the store was closing within an hour or so. My options were to leave it overnight (and drive home in the winter darkness with no phone) or return the following day.
